Kodak EC35 is a $35 reusable slide-cover camera in 7 colours & easy film loading.

RETO, the company that builds Kodak-branded cameras, is on a mission to get more people shooting film. This little plastic gadget may be the first camera of its type to have a slide lens cover (à la Olympus Mju I, analog.cafe/r/olympus-mju-…), which seems quite fun and is significantly cheaper than the original.

While the EC35 certainly won’t be able to take photos like the Mju (the Kodak camera has a fixed 1/100 shutter and f/10 aperture, whereas the Olympus uses an autofocused f/3.5 glass lens), it’s much cheaper and probably less likely to break.

I reviewed several RETO products on this website. Despite being made predominantly from plastic, the build and design quality had always impressed me. Though I haven’t had the chance to test the EC35, I expect it to be pleasant to hold in hand and to last several years.

The EC35 also features a 25mm twoplet resin lens design, which should yield slightly more resolution than a typical reusable or disposable film camera. It’s also pretty wide, which is excellent for up-close portraits.

Good exposures can be challenging since the camera has no way to adjust the shutter or aperture. However, with an ISO 50-100 film, you should get perfect exposures in full sun, which could be further assisted by flash in the shade.

This tool can help you select the right film for your settings (with aperture to f/11 and shutter speed to 125): analog.cafe/r/olympus-mju-….

To use flash, you’ll need to be mindful of the distance between you and your subject, which should vary depending on the type of film you’ll be using with your camera:

While this camera does not have a motorized film advance, loading film should be fairly easy, as the video tutorial suggests: youtube.com/watch?v=AlrMry….

The camera is available on its own or bundled with a roll of 24-exp Kodak Ultramax film (film reviewed here: analog.cafe/r/kodak-ultram…).
