film Q v1.0.0 introduces improved RAW file processing, several bugfixes, and experimental colour correction.
The latest update significantly improves colours for high-contrast films scanned with digital cameras. And you can further improve the images with the new colour correction algorithm. Let me explain how that works, exactly:
Some digital cameras and dedicated film scanners do not report their Bayer filter configuration, which can cause interpretation errors in the RAW file reader software. I built a new function that distinguishes cameras that do and don’t report this data, applying custom settings for each scenario. This fixes contrast and saturation issues on some cameras, especially with films like Harman Phoenix on previous versions of film Q.
Thanks to Guillermo Luijk, whose 2007 guide to DCRAW was instrumental in improving camera readings with Bayer filter data: guillermoluijk.com/tutoria….
A new Colour Correct (BETA) feature is now available in the Settings menu. Designed to keep colours as natural as possible, it can remove colour casts using a computer vision technique that models and automates the greyscale reference method (this is how you can apply it manually:
My goal with this new feature is to make film scanning easier. It brings images closer to finished colour while preserving a flat, unedited look. This helps retain the film’s natural characteristics without overprocessing. The result stays close to the film’s natural reproduction qualities and leaves ample room for optional contrast, sharpness, and colour edits.
I’ve applied various UI improvements across the app, plus a fix for settings not being saved correctly when changed in the modal menu.
This feels like a good place to make a first stable release!
This app has been in the works for over five years. There is, of course, more that I want to add and improve — expect frequent updates and continued support.
And a special thank you to those who helped me develop this app with sample scans, feedback, and bug reports.
