A Deep Dive into the Compact Point & Shoot 35mm Film Cameras: Part 1 Overview

The Compact Point & Shoot 35mm Project began in the summer of 2024 after a rekindling of my passion for compact film cameras. With a collection that includes the highly regarded Contax T2, Yashica T3, T5, and others, my goal was to shoot a film roll through each camera and evaluate their performance against one another.

Having recently enjoyed the T2 on a Brighton Photo Walk, I was inspired to test all 32 compact film cameras in my collection between June and October 2024. In total, I processed approximately 68 rolls of film throughout this project, capturing various moments and subjects.

One of the exciting aspects of compact cameras is their convenient size and fast usability, perfect for capturing spontaneous moments. The project’s parameters defined a ‘compact point and shoot’ as a 35mm film camera that is small enough to fit in a pocket and comes equipped with a fixed lens, excluding other variations like half-frame or digital cameras. It’s fascinating to see how these compact devices, primarily designed for casual photography, can yield significant creative results.

Evaluating the Cameras

To assess the various models, I devised an objective scoring system. Each camera was rated out of 10 across six categories: Quality (Q), Look (L), Durability (D), Price (P), Handling (H), and Functionality (F). Here’s how the first few cameras stack up:

1. Contax T2

First up, my favorite: the Contax T2. Released in 1991, this camera features a Carl Zeiss T* Sonnar 38mm f/2.8 lens, which I've come to admire for its sharpness and versatility. With both automatic and manual settings, it’s an excellent choice for photographers who appreciate control.

The T2's titanium body raises its durability, making it feel robust yet light at 295g. Despite its exceptional features, this camera is currently priced over £1000—quite steep compared to some other compact options, but worth it for the performance.

Score Breakdown: Q=9, L=9, D=9, P=4, H=8, F=8. Total Score: 47

2. Yashica AW-Mini

The Yashica AW-Mini comes next, equipped with a 32mm f/3.5 lens and designed for complete automation. At only 230g, this weatherproof model is super lightweight and easy to use. Although it may not match the sharpness of its more advanced counterparts, it offers decent performance and comes much cheaper at around £50.

Score Breakdown: Q=6, L=5, D=7, P=8, H=6, F=5. Total Score: 37

3. Pentax Espio Mini

Next, the Pentax Espio Mini, known as the UC-1 in the USA, features a 32mm f/3.5 lens and weighs just 155g. It boasts a panorama mode, though its utility is debatable. This model excels in portability, making it a great companion for those on the go. Typically priced around £125, it meets a good balance between functionality and cost.

Score Breakdown: Q=7, L=7, D=7, P=7, H=6, F=6. Total Score: 40

4. Yashica T5

The Yashica T5 is another gem and a personal favorite, often recognized for its exceptional Carl Zeiss Tessar 35mm f/3.5 lens. Known for its sharpness and versatility, this camera is fully automatic but retains a level of sophistication that photographers appreciate. The T5 has become a sought-after model, particularly after being favored by fashion photographer Terry Richardson, raising its price to around £500.

Score Breakdown: Q=9, L=8, D=8, P=7, H=7, F=6. Total Score: 45

5. Olympus mju-II

The Olympus mju-II, known for its sleek design and splashproof feature, was my go-to camera in my youth. Weighing only 135g, it’s one of the smallest compacts available. Its f/2.8 lens is particularly fast, making it suitable for varied lighting conditions. The mju-II is currently valued at around £200, representing substantial quality for its size.

Score Breakdown: Q=8, L=7, D=7, P=7, H=6, F=6. Total Score: 41

6. Contax TVS-III

Finally, the Contax TVS-III offers a unique take with a variable focal length lens ranging from 30mm to 60mm. Although its aperture varies from f/3.7 to f/6.7, it serves well under bright conditions. Weighing 311g, it’s more substantial than the T2, but offers unique capabilities. The TVS-III can currently be found for around £500, making it a consideration for those wanting versatility in a compact form.

Score Breakdown: Q=7, L=8, D=7, P=6, H=6, F=7. Total Score: 41
